Rock and Roll has been one of the most important cultural events of the
twentieth and twenty-first centuries for pop culture and the formation of identities;
but primarily it has gone hand in hand with the appearance of a youth culture in clear
conflict with and rebellion against its elders and the traditional establishment. These
spaces of apparently counter-cultural pop culture have generated subdivisions,
among those that of independent or "indie" music, which is music that is not
associated with the commercialism of the major labels but rather with artistic
production and a ‘Do-it-Yourself’ mentality.
Independent music in Ecuador is still emergent, and there is a serious gap
between it and its equivalents in other countries. Originally it was developed through
collaborative community and group work. Nevertheless, many of these community
values have been modified by the coming of new generations, and above all by the
paradigm shifts in the diffusion of and public interaction with music, primarily since
the popuarization of the internet.
Plan Arteria is the first digital news media in Ecuador that specializes in
independent music, and after 10 years of operations, its editors now see the necessity
of redefining the website's role in the independent music scene; they find themselves
driven to mature in content and editorial quality. Nevertheless the problems of
financing mean that this requires extra efforts to be made in search of alternative
funding sources. These issues are explored throughout this. |
