Sumario: Mamá Vudú, a band with more than 20 years of experience, is one of the symbols of the Ecuadorian indie movement, thanks to both its albums and its work in cultural administration through the Young Music Foundation (Fundación Música Joven) and the organization of Quitofest. Using an overview of Mamá Vudú’s history, which addresses both musical production and the work of the band’s members in the area of cultural administration, this academic article seeks to resolve the question of how the band’s varying conceptual propositions –lyrical, sonic, cultural, social and others- and its context, led Mamá Vudú to become an significant reference point for Ecuadorian indie music and achieve cult band status for a notable sector of Ecuadorian young adults, while contributing to the construction of these young people’s identities. This work is likewise anchored in the tradition of musical journalism and is of an exploratory nature, in pursuit of collaborating in the construction of a solid academic base for future research regarding the Ecuadorian independent rock scene, in which the absence of specific foundational literature (in the realms of both theory and popular media) has been one of the biggest obstacles to eliminating Ecuadorian society’s prejudices regarding rock music.
