Sumario: Objective: To measure the heat liberation at 1 and 6 mm from the apex when preparing the root canal system with the ProTaper® rotary system or the manual crown-technique.Material and methods: This was an experimental investigation; 52 teeth with one root canal were prepared: 26 with ProTaper® rotatory system and 26 with manual crown-down technique. They were decoronated at 16 mm, in order to prepare them with the crown-down technique and ProTaper® rotary system at 37°C. Type K thermocouples were bonded to the root at 1 and 6 mm from the apex and plugged to digital thermometers, to measure the final instrumentation temperature. Results: The highest heat detachment was for Gates Glidden burs #2 and #3 in manual crown-down technique and ProTaper® system F2 and F3, but these were no significant. Conclusions: Manual crown-down technique and ProTaper® rotary system do not present heat detachment that can be harmful for the surrounding tissues.
